Newport Oregon

Newport is a favorite destination of the Central Oregon Coast. There is so much to do in this town that it is unlikely you will find yourself yawning during your visit; that is unless rest and relaxation is part of the master plan.

On the far north end of Newport is the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. This is a must see attraction when visiting Newport. On most days you can climb to the top of the lighthouse and visit the local interpretive center for historical displays and local area information. Further south, just before you cross the bridge is the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. From here you have more terrific views of the Newport area. Each lighthouse is different from the other but both give a terrific glimpse back into Newport's history. Make sure you have your camera when visiting these spots, you'll want to take pictures.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium and Hatfield Marine Science Center are another one-two punch that are favorites for kids and adults alike. These two spots are very close to one another making it easy to visit each of them on the same day. The exhibits at the Oregon Coast Aquarium are world-class and include "Passages of the Deep"; a 200-foot tunnel taking you underwater so that you can see underwater creatures like you have never seen them before. You will also find the largest outdoor seabird avNewport ORiary in North America.

Another day can certainly be spent exploring the Historic Newport Bayfront where you will find Wax Works, Ripley's Believe It or Not! and other terrific small shops and restaurants. This area is vintage Newport and will give you all the sights, smells, and sensations of a true coastal experience. You will see signs to access the Bayfront from the northern side of the bridge. For the adults you may also wish to make a stop at the Rogue Brewery, which is just across the bridge on the southern side.

Of course there are those other things that we all love about the beach; flying a kite, building sandcastles and searching for treasuries washed in from the sea. You can do all of these things, and stay at some of the best lodging on the entire Oregon Coast. Newport really offers it all.
