In the front yard you have the Pacific Ocean, in the backyard, the Siuslaw National Forest. Florence is known for its beauty and diversity; you will find rivers, lakes, lush forest, sand dunes, and both rugged and sandy beaches. There are some terrific places to visit in Florence Oregon. These include Heceta Head State Park and viewpoint, the Sea Lion Caves, Sutton Recreation Area, Oregon Dunes, and Jesse M. Honeyman Memorial State Park.
Starting to the north of Florence is the Heceta Head State Park and Lighthouse, one of our favorite places to visit on the Oregon Coast. You enter this park off Highway 101, dropping down to an ocean-level day-use parking lot. From here you are literally looking straight up at the Cape Creek Bridge. You are then able to explore the creek, walk a gorgeous sandy beach, and take a hike up to the lighthouse for a tour and some great photo opportunities. The hike is 3/8 of a mile; almost all of it up hill, so eat your Wheaties and bring your walking shoes. If you have not done so before, you absolutely can't go to Florence without visiting Heceta Head. There is a fee to park, but it is well worth the money, and after visiting a park like this you will feel good about that contribution.
Just a little further south towards Florence you will find the Sea Lion Caves. This is a popular attraction that will be enjoyed by the whole family. You will drop 20 stories in an elevator, visiting the largest sea cave in the world. Not only is this a favorite for the kids, but also an equivalent favorite for the sea lions, and they will be sure to not disappoint.
Just two miles north of Florence Oregon is the Sutton Recreation day-use Area. This is an enjoyable area to hike. You will be able to visit creeks, forests and dunes all on miles of interconnected trails. And if you get done with all of those trails and want more, just move on to the south side of Florence. You will be greeted my miles of towering sand dune. This is the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. It is a terrific area for hiking and exploring all that nature has to offer. You won't have a problem finding the trails, and it is unlikely that you will run out of space to roam!
Florence is known for its many lakes. A visit to Jesse M. Honeyman Memorial State Park will give you the chance to experience a few of them including Cleawox Lake and Woahink Lake. You are able to participate in all of your favorite water sports between these two lakes, including fishing, canoeing, water skiing, swimming and more. If you have a family with a diverse set of interests, the Florence area is a perfect vacation destination for you!
