Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. The city is nestled on steep hillsides overlooking the Columbia River, and is a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. This town has a number of interesting places for the family to visit. There is the Astoria Column, a 125-foot pole that depicts the history of our North West with elaborate art. The Column is situated at the top of Coxcomb Hill; from here you can see a panoramic view of Astoria's city, the Columbia River, acres of forestland, Astoria's historical bridge, and much more. After getting a good view of the city, you will want to visit the Columbia River Maritime Museum, the Riverfront Trolley and Fort Stevens State Park.
If you haven't been to Astoria in person, maybe you have visited in another way. A number of hit movies have been filmed in Astoria including Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy, Short Circuit, The Goonies and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. Stop by the Chamber of Commerce while in town and pick up "Shot In Astoria," a book that will walk you through some of the filming locations.
There are so many interpretative centers and historical spots to visit in this town that it is doubtful you will get a chance to visit all of them - but hey, why don't you give it a shot!
